This is a list of known fixes and features that the Office 97 Service Release 1 patch implements:

Word

• Stops use of 100% of CPU capacity while typing.
• Mapped network drives now available
• Saving to Word 6/95 format now makes a real 6/95 format file rather than a RTF file with a DOC extension.
• Word for Macintosh files with EPS graphics are printed correctly.
• Inserted graphics default to being ‘in place’ with no wrapping rather than a ‘Float over Text’ image – this implements a recommendation in Word 97 Annoyances.
• Graphics appearing as a red X on the screen is repaired.
• Images keep sizing information correctly.
• Word picks up the correct default language from Windows.
• Graphics printed correctly on printers with non-symmetrical resolutions.
• False Licencing Error when using an ActiveX control distributed to you is fixed.
• Gridlines are not visible when you link data as a Microsoft Excel Worksheet in Word.

Excel

• Views and reports from earlier Excel versions now work.
• Invalid characters in module names are fixed as you save.
• Cutting and pasting in pivot tables is now permitted.
• Printing bug with borders is now fixed.
• Worksheet database functions can refer to ranges that contain more than 32,768 rows
• Row and Column functions now work correctly.
• Control of export as HTML from OLE Automation clients.
• Sheet names can now include accented characters that aren’t in the standard ANSI character set.
• Returning data from an external query into Excel 97 can be much slower than with earlier versions of Excel.  SR-1 is faster.
• False Licencing Error when using an ActiveX control distributed to you is fixed.

PowerPoint

• Graphics appearing as a red X on the screen is repaired.
• A embedded Word table with borders does not display correctly - some borders are missing.
• Saving in PowerPoint 7 format now converts embedded Graph 97 objects back to the Graph 7 format.
• Fixes to the Lotus Freelance 2.1 import filter

Outlook

• Internet Mail Enhancement Patch (IMEP) integrated into Outlook (previously available as a separate add-on).
• Read messages may not always show the correct ‘envelope’ icon.
• MAPI spooler has been somewhat stabilized.

Office generally

• The ‘Remove earlier versions of Office’ option during Office 97 setup can remove shared files from network server.
• Removing Office 97 also deleted Msencode.dll that can be required by other programs (like Microsoft Publisher)
• Corrupted AutoCorrect files are now handled more gracefully (ie they don’t cause Office applications to fall in a heap).
• Slow opening / closing of Office files (caused by journal feature in Outlook) is fixed.
• Improved security in ODBC (passwords are no longer in the clear).
• Support for Intel’s MMX technology in OfficeArt improves rendering performance of JPEG files.
